After School Basketball Clinics Are Back with Basketball Basics!

NORA is teaming up with Basketball Basics to bring you another round of action-packed after school basketball clinics — and we’re thrilled to announce that former NBA player Ben Poquette will be coaching!

Ben Poquette was a 1st Team All-MAC selection (1977) and a Central Michigan University Hall of Famer. After college, he went on to play 10 seasons in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons, Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Chicago Bulls. Your young athletes will be learning from someone who has competed at the highest level!

*Jim McGannon (Founder of Basketball Basics) will be coaching the Friday session at Ferry. Coach McGannon has trained many high level athletes and played D1 basketball at Dartmouth*

Who Can Join?

These clinics are open to all K–4th grade students. Participants do NOT need to attend the school they register for — they just need to be able to get to that school on time after dismissal.

Youth Basketball Clinic - Fall 2026

Ready to work on your basketball skills, have some fun, and learn from players who love the game? Join brothers Micah and Eli Casteneda-Kelley for a four-week basketball clinic designed to help elementary-age players build confidence and improve their fundamentals in a fun, encouraging environment.

Coach Micah and Coach Eli have been playing basketball their whole lives and currently play for the Grand Haven High School JV and Varsity basketball teams. They’ll bring their experience, enthusiasm, and positive attitude to each session while helping young players develop the skills they need to enjoy the game and continue improving.

Each week will include a mix of fundamental skill instruction, fun drills, and basketball games. Players will work on skills such as dribbling, passing, shooting, footwork, defense, and ball control while learning how to use those skills during game play. Activities will be adjusted for each age group so both beginning players and those with more experience can have fun and be challenged.

No previous basketball experience is required. All skill levels are welcome. Wear gym shoes and comfortable clothes for exercising, bring a water bottle. We will have plenty of basketballs but if you would like to bring your own ball, please make sure it is clearly labeled with child's first and last name.

Fall Mini-Bowling League at Grand Fun! - Fall 2026

Join NORA and Grand Fun for a six-week Fall Mini-Bowling League! Kids in grades 1-4 and older kids in grades 5 - 8 will bowl 2-3 games each week while tracking their scores throughout the season. Participants will build confidence, improve their skills, cheer on their fellow bowlers, and enjoy friendly competition as they work toward end-of-season league awards.

Mini-bowling offers all the excitement of traditional bowling in a kid-friendly format that's easy to learn and fun for all skill levels. Whether your child is trying mini-bowling for the first time or already loves the game, this league is a great way to spend time after school on Mondays this fall!

Intro to Taekwondo - Fall 2026

Discover the art of Taekwondo through our exciting 6-week recreational introductory class, presented in collaboration with Lakeshore Taekwondo Academy in Grand Haven. Led by skilled LTA instructors, participants will delve into the fundamentals of Taekwondo, focusing on basic techniques, forms, and self-defense maneuvers. 

As the course culminates, attendees will have the opportunity to showcase their newfound skills and dedication, earning an invitation to test for their well-deserved yellow stripe belt—an emblem of their commitment and progress in this empowering martial art. T-shirt included. 

Class Meets: Thursdays 5:30pm - 6:30pm - Griffin Elementary School Gymnasium

Students are invited to attend a belt test preparation practice on Friday, November 13 5:30pm at Lakeshore Taekwondo Academy

Intro to Tiger Tots - Fall 2026

Intro to Tiger Tots is a fun, high-energy introduction to martial arts designed especially for our youngest participants. This 30-minute, once-a-week class focuses on helping children build foundational skills in a positive and encouraging environment. Through age-appropriate activities and games, Tiger Tots learn how to listen to instructors, follow directions, and develop balance, coordination, and self-confidence.

Over the 6-week session, students will be introduced to basic Taekwondo movements while also learning important personal safety concepts. The class wraps up with a special belt test celebration, giving Tiger Tots a chance to show what they’ve learned and feel proud of their accomplishments. This program is a great first step for young children to explore movement, discipline, and confidence—all while having fun.

Lead by Ms Alaina Feldpausch from Lakeshore Taekwondo Academy. This class will meet on Fridays from 4:30pm - 5pm at Lakeshore Taekwondo Academy in Grand Haven. Kids will be invited to participate in a belt test on Saturday, November 14 at 9am at LTA. 

4th Grade Girls Basketball - Fall 2026

4th Grade Girls Basketball League

First Practice: Week of October 12 (communication on practice schedule will come from team coach).

Games: Games will be played at White Pines Intermediate School at 5:30pm or 6:30pm on Wednesday evenings. Games will be played on October 28, November 4, 11, 18, December 2, 9

End of season tournament: December 12 (Time TBD)

Practice days and times- TBD (Plan on 1-2 days a week, right after school at the school)

Lake Hills - Tuesdays - 4:00-5:00 PM

Peach Plains - Tuesdays - 4:00-5:00 PM

Registration includes a team jersey.

Volunteers needed: 
Head Coach - schedule practices, communicate with other head coaches, officials, NORA staff. 
Assistant Coach - attend practice and assist head coach, communicate with parents
Fundraising - find a sponsor for your team, NORA will provide information on tax receipt, etc. 

5th & 6th Grade Girls Basketball - Fall 2026

Join us for this fun after-school house league. All skill levels welcome as we develop foundational basketball skills as well as leadership and teamwork together. All practices will be held at White Pines after school from 4:00pm-5:30pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays. All games will also be held on Tuesdays/Thursdays at White Pines with a short team warm up and then games will begin at 4:30pm - 5:30pm. Spectators welcome for games but practices are closed to spectators.

White Pines Wednesdays - Basketball Skills & Drills - Fall 2026

Whether you're preparing for the upcoming basketball season or simply enjoy shooting hoops with friends, this after-school program is a great opportunity to improve your game.

Coach Bailey Bertapelle will lead participants through age-appropriate drills focused on ball handling, passing, shooting, defense, and teamwork. Each session will include skill development activities along with fun games and scrimmages that help players build confidence and have fun.

This co-ed program welcomes players of all experience levels. Bring athletic shoes, a water bottle, and a positive attitude as we get ready for basketball season together.

5th/6th Grade Indoor Tennis - Fall 2026

We’re looking for volunteer coaches—training will be provided by Varsity Tennis Coach Chris Wilton

White Pines Wednesdays - Archery - Fall II 2026

Join Coach Jackie Rowland for an exciting introduction to archery or an opportunity to continue building your skills.

Participants will learn proper shooting technique, range safety, equipment use, and target shooting fundamentals while enjoying a variety of archery games and challenges. Beginners are welcome, and experienced archers will receive coaching to help improve accuracy and consistency.

All equipment is provided. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes.

White Pines Wednesdays - Pickleball - Winter 2027

Come discover why pickleball is America's fastest-growing sport!

Members of the Lakeshore Pickleball Club and Grand Haven High School pickleball players will introduce participants to the fundamentals of the game through fun drills, skill-building activities, and friendly matches. Players will learn serving, scoring, court positioning, and game strategy in a welcoming environment designed for beginners and developing players.

Whether you've never picked up a paddle or already have some experience, this program is a great way to stay active, learn a new sport, and have fun with friends after school. Equipment provided but you're welcome to bring your own if you want.

Winter Break Art Camps - Winter 2026

Beat the Winter Break Blues with these fun winter break art camps! Three camps in three days, pick one, two or join us for all 3 - the choice is yours! Let your young artist shine and make some fantastic winter art projects. Each day will have a main project theme and then there will be other art opportunities if they finish early. These camps are taught by Kristal Heibel, owner of West Michigan Paint & Create. All skill levels are welcome and parents do not have to stay.

Class will be held M-Wed December 28 - 30 at Lakeshore Middle School in the Cafeteria. Drop off and pick up will be at the external Cafeteria door on the North end of the building off Cutler/7th Street. 

White Pines Wednesdays - Baseball/Softball Skills & Drills - Winter II 2027

Spring sports will be here before you know it!

Coach Bailey Bertapelle will help participants prepare for baseball and softball season through age-appropriate drills, games, and skill development activities. Players will work on throwing, catching, fielding, hitting mechanics, and overall athletic movement.

This program welcomes both beginners and experienced players and provides a fun opportunity to stay active while preparing for the upcoming season.

Fall Youth Fishing - Saturdays at Bass River - Fall 2026

Join new NORA instructor Ethyn Minner, local high schooler and outdoors enthusiast, for these fun 2 week fishing sessions at Bass River Recreation Area. Register for one or both sessions, each session includes 2 Saturdays. Perfect for ages 6+. Bait provided, no experience necessary. If you need a fishing pole, reach out to Jackie Rowland (rowlandj@norarec.org), we have plenty of extras!

White Pines Wednesdays - Archery II - Spring 2027

Archery is back for another White Pines Wednesdays session!

Whether you're joining us for the first time or returning to continue improving your skills, this program offers a fun and supportive environment for archers of all experience levels.

Participants will practice shooting form, accuracy, and consistency while enjoying games and challenges that make every session engaging.

All equipment is provided, and beginners are encouraged to participate.

White Pines Wednesdays - Bikes & Geocaching - Spring 2027

Adventure awaits on two wheels!

Join Jackie Rowland for three afternoons of biking and geocaching around the Grand Haven area. Participants will ride local pathways and trails while learning how to use GPS technology and geocaching clues to locate hidden caches.

Along the way we'll explore parks, discover new places, and enjoy the thrill of the hunt as we search for geocaches hidden throughout the community.

Participants should bring a bicycle, helmet, and water bottle. Helmets are required. Need a bike? Let NORA know and we'll do our best to provide one through our Outdoor Recreation Gear Library.

This program is perfect for kids who enjoy being active, exploring outdoors, and solving puzzles.

Fall Adult Dodgeball League - Fall 2026

Get ready to duck, dip, dive, and dodge! Our Adult Dodgeball League is a fun and energetic way to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy some friendly competition. Open to players of all skill levels, this league emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and a good time on the court.

Location - Lakeshore Middle School AUX GYM

Dates - October 29, November 5, 12, 19, & December 3, 10 (Make-Up Date - December 17)

Game Times - Games begin at 6:00 PM and will run for 40 minutes. No game will end after 9:00 PM
